Oak Meadow Children’s House teacher Beth Hickey recently presented at the Montessori Schools of Massachusetts conference held at Dean College in Franklin, Mass. this past Saturday. Mrs. Hickey’s presentation entitled “Yoga and Meditation: For your Self, For your Class” focused on the benefits of yoga and meditation, including the ability to respond more thoughtfully to emotionally proactive situations both in and outside of the classroom.

“The session was entirely experiential, beginning with a simple meditation to see how it felt,” Mrs. Hickey explained. “In demonstrating and doing yoga poses, I noted that this is a meditation on the body where all other thoughts leave your mind while you focus on the pose, the stretching feeling, maybe the stiffness of a muscle.”

Mrs. Hickey, who has practiced yoga for the past 20 years, is certified in the Radiant Child Yoga Program, “one of the first children’s yoga trainings available in the world” according to their website. Radiant Child Yoga believes in nurturing the spirit in each child and reclaiming it for each teacher. Mrs. Hickey has also received her certificate from the Mindfulness Based Stressed Reduction Program developed in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. In addition to incorporating yoga, meditation, and visualization exercises in her daily classes, Mrs. Hickey also offers meditation and yoga classes to faculty and staff.
